This initiative is the brainchild of Pinstripes & Peonies, a creative floral design company based at New Covent Garden Flower Market. The Second Hand Flower Shop is their attempt to take this ‘waste’ and repurpose it for something good, create inspiring spaces and generally enrich people's lives. By purchasing a SHFS bouquet, you get beautiful flowers and you also get to help others.

We hate saying this out loud, but floristry isn’t very green. Event florists buy and make thousands of pounds worth of stunning flowers every day. The flowers are used briefly, perhaps even just for an evening and then, despite our best efforts, sometimes up to 50% of them go into the compost heap. Nothing wrong with them, just nowhere else for them to go. But now, enter the Second Hand Flower Shop! Let us introduce ourselves...

SHFS bouquets will be hand-made by expert florists and will consist entirely of (stunning!) flowers that have been repurposed from events and weddings. The sale of these bouquets will support Pinstripes & Peonies’ mission to create Gardens
for Schools.

SHFS bouquets will be hand-made by expert florists and will consist entirely of (stunning!) flowers that have been repurposed from events and weddings. The sale of these bouquets will support Pinstripes & Peonies’ mission to create Gardens for Schools.

Since January 2023 Pinstripes & Peonies have been sponsoring their local primary school in Vauxhall to create a spectacular garden for students to enjoy. Previously unkept, with no resources for its maintenance, the space is now abundant with thriving plants and florals once used at events and weddings. Whilst giving back to the community, the space is also being used to educate the students about nature, wildlife and wellbeing. Following the success of their first garden, Pinstripes & Peonies would like to roll out this initiative to more schools.

fully functional and enjoyable for the children
who use them.

The overheads of the Second Hand Flower Shop are entirely covered by Ruari McCulloch and Pinstripes & Peonies Ltd.

Kindly hosted by District in their Nine Elms cafe
(7 New Union Square, SW11 7DN) you can find
the SHFS stand located in their relaxing outside space and stop in for a coffee whilst you’re there – win, win.

We asked District to partner with us on this project because not only love their product, but also their similar ethos. We’re both independent local businesses trying to make a positive impact around us. Neighbours helping neighbours, and in turn helping a local community project.

We’re hoping our SHFS bouquets create a bit of an elusive appeal – sometimes they will be there, sometimes they won’t. Because the bouquets are made entirely of repurposed flowers, their availability will depend on when the flowers come back from events and weddings. We will regularly update our Instagram account with what is available, so if you want to ensure you are able to get your hands on stunning, seasonal and do-good bouquets, give us a follow.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about the project! As a fledgling idea there will doubtless be a learning curve, and we expect to make mistakes which we will be open and honest about.

We welcome feedback and ideas of additional potential vendors as we grow, please find our contact details below.

We hope the flowers find a good home but if nothing else, please stop and smell the roses.

BE KIND. LIFE IS SHORT
